What are mutual obligation requirements?
Mutual obligation requirements are activities you must do to show you are actively looking for work and engaging with Centrelink's employment services. They can include:
- Applying for a set number of jobs per month (usually 4–20)
- Attending appointments with your employment services provider
- Participating in approved activities (training, volunteering, short courses)
- Accepting suitable job offers
Your Job Plan
After you claim, you will be connected with an employment services provider through Workforce Australia. You and your provider set a Job Plan that lists your specific requirements.
What if you can't meet your requirements?
You can request a temporary exemption if you have a valid reason — for example, illness, caring for a sick family member, or a natural disaster. Call Centrelink or tell your provider as soon as possible.
Failure to meet requirements
If you don't meet requirements without a valid reason, Centrelink can apply a mutual obligation failure — which can result in a payment suspension or demerits under the Points Based Activation System (PBAS).
If this happens, you have the right to ask for a review of the decision.
