Who can get Rent Assistance?

You may be eligible if you:

  • Already receive an eligible payment (JobSeeker, Age Pension, Family Tax Benefit, etc.)
  • Pay rent for private accommodation (not government housing)
  • Pay rent above the minimum threshold

Minimum rent threshold (from 20 September 2026)

  • Single, no children: $152.00/fortnight
  • Couple: $193.40/fortnight

You must pay more than this in rent before Rent Assistance kicks in. Source: Services Australia — Rent Assistance rates.

Maximum Rent Assistance rates

  • Single, no children: up to $211.20/fortnight
  • Single with children: up to $250.40/fortnight
  • Couple, no children: up to $199.00/fortnight

Rent Assistance is automatically added to your payment if you are eligible — you usually don't need to claim it separately.

Updating your rent details

You must tell Centrelink if your rent changes. Update your rent through myGov or by calling Centrelink on 132 300. Not updating can cause an overpayment or mean you miss out on higher assistance.
