What is the ordinary waiting period?

The ordinary waiting period (OWP) is a fixed 2-week delay after your claim is approved before your first payment. It applies to:

  • JobSeeker Payment
  • Youth Allowance (job seekers)
  • Parenting Payment (in some circumstances)

Who is exempt?

You may be exempt from the OWP if:

  • You are in severe financial hardship (certain liquid assets limits apply)
  • You left work due to domestic violence
  • You are a principal carer of a dependent child
  • You have a partial capacity to work due to a disability or illness
  • You are experiencing a major personal crisis (e.g., natural disaster)

Contact Centrelink on 132 850 to ask about an exemption on the day you claim.

Other waiting periods to know

Separate from the OWP, there are other potential waiting periods:

  • Liquid assets waiting period: If you have liquid assets above $5,500 (single) or $11,000 (partnered/with children), you wait up to 13 weeks before payments start.
  • Employment separation certificate: If you voluntarily left your last job or were dismissed, a further 4-week (or up to 8-week) wait can apply.

See the JobSeeker claim guide for how to navigate both.

Claiming early to reduce the wait

The waiting period starts from the date Centrelink receives your claim — not from when it is approved. Claim as soon as you become unemployed, even if your claim is still pending. See the documents checklist to make sure you have everything ready before you submit.
