Step 1: Request an Authorised Review Officer (ARO) review

The first step is an ARO review. This is an internal Centrelink review — a senior officer who was not involved in the original decision looks at it again.

  • Request within 13 weeks of the original decision
  • Ask at a service centre or call Centrelink on 132 300
  • It is free

While your review is pending, your payment usually continues at the existing rate.

Step 2: Get a statement of reasons

Ask Centrelink to provide a written statement of reasons for the original decision. This helps you understand why it was made and build your case for review.

Step 3: Get free legal help

Community Legal Centres and Legal Aid offices can help you prepare your case for free. Find your nearest service at nationallegalaid.org.au.

Step 4: Appeal to the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART)

If you disagree with the ARO outcome, you can appeal to the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART). The ART is independent of Centrelink and its hearings are usually informal. This is still free.

Lodge your application at art.gov.au within 13 weeks of the ARO decision.
