Before you claim: check eligibility

To receive Parenting Payment (single) you must:

  • Be a single person who is the principal carer of a child
  • Your youngest child must be under 14
  • Be an Australian resident
  • Meet the income test and assets test

If you are partnered, see Parenting Payment (partnered) — the youngest child must be under 6.

Step 1 — Gather your documents

Before you start your claim, collect:

  • Your and your child's proof of identity (birth certificate, passport, or ImmiCard)
  • Your child's birth certificate showing you as parent
  • Your tax file number (TFN) — Centrelink needs this but will never ask for it by phone or email
  • Bank account details for payment
  • Evidence of separation (if applicable): tenancy agreements, statutory declaration, or separation certificate
  • Proof of income for the last 8 weeks (payslips, employer letter)

Use the full documents checklist to make sure you have everything ready.

Step 2 — Start your claim in myGov

  1. Sign into myGov and open your Centrelink account.
  2. Select Make a claim → Families → Parenting Payment.
  3. Answer the eligibility questions. The system will show whether Parenting Payment (single) or (partnered) applies to you.
  4. Complete all sections — do not skip any, as incomplete claims cause delays.

Claim from the day you become eligible. Back-payment is generally not available for more than 4 weeks.

Step 3 — Upload documents and submit

Upload your identity documents and any other evidence requested during the claim. You can upload files (PDF, JPG) directly in myGov — no need to visit a service centre unless asked.

Once submitted, Centrelink will send you an acknowledgement letter with a claim reference number. Keep this — you will need it if you need to follow up.

Step 4 — Centrelink assessment

Centrelink aims to process claims within 49 days (complex claims can take longer). You may be asked to attend an interview or provide more documents. Respond promptly to any letters or myGov messages to avoid delays.

If your circumstances change during the assessment period (new income, change of address), update your details in myGov immediately.

Step 5 — After approval

Once approved, you will receive a letter with your payment rate and start date. You must:

  • Report income every fortnight through myGov or the Express Plus app — see how to report your income.
  • Tell Centrelink if your child's age, care arrangements, or living situation changes.
  • Comply with any mutual obligation requirements. From age of youngest child 6+, some part-time participation requirements apply.

If something changes or you disagree with a decision, see the review guide.
